Design & Development Studio — Melbourne
Lisa had been baking honey cakes from her Melbourne kitchen for years. Word of mouth was doing the heavy lifting — but her online presence wasn't keeping up. We built her a site that finally matched the craft behind the product.
Lisa came to us with a clear problem: she was taking orders through Instagram DMs, losing track of requests, and turning away customers because she couldn't manage the volume. Her business had outgrown the platform it was built on — but she didn't want a generic bakery website. She wanted something that felt as personal and considered as her baking.
The challenge was translating that warmth into a digital experience. Honey cakes are tactile, seasonal, handmade — qualities that don't survive a template. We needed to design something that made the craft visible.
In our discovery sessions, we talked less about the website and more about the people who buy from her. Honey Cake Queen's customers are largely women, 30–55, buying for occasions — birthdays, housewarmings, thank-yous. They find her through Instagram, a friend's recommendation, or a cake they spotted at a gathering. They're not price-sensitive. They're buying something that feels special.
That insight shaped everything: the editorial tone, the photography brief, the ordering flow, the way we described the cakes. Every decision referenced back to what her customers were actually looking for when they landed on the site.
The final site is a five-page custom build: homepage, menu, how to order, about Lisa, and a contact/enquiry page. No template, no page builder — written from scratch to load fast on mobile, where over 80% of her traffic comes from.
We replaced the Instagram-DM ordering process with a simple enquiry form that captures the occasion, preferred flavour, date needed, and delivery suburb. Lisa now gets a structured brief for every enquiry instead of a scattered DM thread.

The Problem in One Line
A business too good for the platform it was on.
Two sessions with Lisa — one about the business, one about the customers. We mapped her order flow, looked at her DM inbox together, and identified exactly where things were falling through the cracks. We also built a mood board before touching any design tools.
Warm cream and deep amber palette. Playfair Display for elegance, a handwritten accent for personality. We designed mobile-first, because that's where her customers are. One round of feedback, two minor tweaks, signed off in week three.
Custom-coded, no page builder, sub-2-second load time. We wrote the copy with Lisa — not for her — so the voice stayed hers. Launched with a one-week soft-open period before going public. No issues at launch.
Lisa · Honey Cake Queen
I kept trying to explain the feeling I wanted and they just got it. The site looks exactly like my cakes taste — considered, warm, and a little bit special. I've had customers tell me they ordered just because of the website.
